Details About Motorizing a Satellite System

Satellite systems for many of us is our source to tune into analogue, digital and High Definition TV. There exists viewing cards & subscriptions for TV packages all across the world, you might have one as well and receiving channels with a dish. The truth is that if you tried turning the dish, it possibly be able to scan in channels from other satellites. The sky is full of satellites and free to view channels that very possibly don't need a large dish. The most viewed satellites in Europe are 13E and 19E which sends out loads of these FTA channels in multiple languages, like French, German and Arabic. At first it perhaps does not sound interesting to view these foreign channels. On the other hand, lets say you would really like to watch a sports event not broadcasted on your current channels but this is transmitted on a FTA channel on another satellite, wouldn't it be great to watch it? There are different types of motors available, such as DiSEqC, 36v Horizon to Horizon and actuators. DiSEqC motors are the most talked about and they are okay for antennas up to 1 meter. With this type of motor it uses the satellite receivers power that runs on 12v/17v. The receivers have limited power for the motor as it combines it with the LNB (Low Noise Block. This tends to make them slow and not so strong as say 36v H to H motors. Still its a simple upgrade because it uses the existing coax cable that already connects to the LNB on your satellite dish. No extra cable needed. 36v H to H motors and actuators are stronger, can handle higher wind loads and power bigger dishes and they use their own power source and cables via a receivers built-in 36v positioner. Most of the newer receivers don't have this positioner built-in but don't worry, in this case you could use a thing like the VBox. One advantage of the V-Box is satellite positions are programmed inside it instead of into the receivers software. All the motors are made to do the same thing, to track the satellite arc within 180 degrees radius. Its not possible to go further as the other satellites are under the horizon, as in not visible. Its a good idea to figure out where to install a dish so trees and other objects are not in the way of view to the satellites you plan to receive. If you have everything aligned correctly the dish will turn to the satellites location as you hop channel. Only limit is now the satellite dish size. Visit Lyngsat to find out which size dish is recommended from your location for any targeted satellite. The larger size dish you have, the more channels you will be able to receive. There is also the possibility of subscribing to packages from other satellites. As said before channels also have English audio. There are choices like Sport, Movie and Music channels. This will however require the receiver can decode the encryption from the viewing card.
Its worth to mention, there are also different types of bands, these are operating in different frequencies. C-Band is low frequency and often needs large dishes. Ku-Band which is the most used, works in higher frequency ranges. Both of these bands have Vertical and Horizontal (Linear), Left and Right (Circular) polarization. A LNB is either Circular or Linear, you could still combine them both on a dish if you put the two LNB's next to each other. If you choose to do this you must use a 2/1 DiSEqC switch, this will automatically tell the receiver what LNB to use for the type of signal. There are endless combination's of dishes, motors and LNB's but don't worry its not as complicated as you may think. The horizon is full of satellites and channels which anyone can catch with the hardware that's currently available today. Enjoy!
