  • Mastercraft Boats:Over 40 Years Of Excellence  By : Ionel Roman A
The enormous number of boat types might be fairly overwhelming when you go shopping for a boat, whether it's a new boat or a used one. Apart from the many types of boats on hand there are also a lot of boat makers, making the buying process even more complex. As a result deciding on either type of boat and/or producer can be a time consuming job. Mastercraft is one of the main boat producers at the moment. Fans and experts alike deem the boats created by Mastercraft to be of high quality and long-lasting at the same time. Mastercraft has been manufacturing boats starting 1968. Today it's very easy to get hold of a first-class transaction when buying Mastercraft boats as there are plenty of dealers all along the state hence a vast total of places to buy from.
The extraordinary performance of the Mastercraft boats is one of the core reasons that many anglers would pick them over other companies. This applies even more to power boats. Mastercraft boats are without doubt a necessity for your water sports tastes. Many of the Mastercraft boats are exclusively planned for competitions.
A profound analysis and consideration is always required when thinking about acquiring recreational boats. Regardless of the broad range and diversity of boat types and manufacturers on today's market it is imperative to think twice before acquiring a yacht appropriate to your needs. You would have much fun for the years to come to benefit from your new acquisition should you have taken the right choice regarding the purchase of a recreational boat.
What's more, don't forget that you can always get a second-hand Mastercraft yacht should the fee of a new one be out of your resources. A first place to check out if there are any used vessels available would be your area trader. There are moments when people who hold boats enter and trade their previous boats ahead of getting new ones. Boats like those can still look good if they have been well cared for and in good shape for the last few years, even if they are as old. Acquiring a power boat that is in good form for just a part of the cost of a new one can prove to be one heck of a trade indeed. Evidently that before buying a second-hand ship one should always make sure that the engine is thoroughly inspected just to be safe and confident with the new acquisition.

  • Chincoteague Island Secrets Revealed  By : Sam Serio
    Chincoteague Island Secrets Revealed

If you didn't succumb to the affliction of horse-craziness as a youngster, then the odds are high that you know neither where Chincoteague Island is, nor why it is important. So we're here to fill you in on the secrets that make the seven-mile length of Chincoteague Island irresistible to over a million visitor each year.

Yes, one of those secrets has to do with horses, which have inhabited Chincoteague and its neighbor Assateague Island for longer than anyone can remember. The secret lies in how the horses, which are actually pony-sized, came to run free on two rather inhospitable (for horses, anyway) strips of sand and marsh where fresh water is at a premium and the grass comes already salted.

If, on the other hand, you had succumbed to horse-craziness in your youth, you'd know all about the classic children's book Misty of Chincoteague, published in 1947 and largely responsible for putting Chincoteague Island on the fast track to tourism super-stardom. In her book, Marguerite Henry attributed the existence of the Chincoteague ponies to the shipwreck of a Spanish galleon in the 1600s. While the more likely story is that today's ponies are descendants of ones turned loose by 18th century island settlers to graze in the islands' vast expanses of marsh grass, no one knows for sure.

That may be one Chincoteague Island secret forever lost to history, but we're going to reveal a few more which will add a bit of extra island zest to your visit.

The delicately flavored, slightly salty Chincoteague oysters, a specialty at the Island's popular island eating establishment The Village Restaurant, really do taste different from oysters you'll have anywhere else. Why? Because all oysters take on the flavor of their surroundings. Fresh Chincoteague oysters will give you a true taste of what it means to live on Chincoteague!
Assateague Island's beaches, just a very short bridge east of the Town of Chincoteague, are certainly some of the truly great beaches about which you've never heard. Standing on a stretch of undeveloped Assateague waterfront which seems to extend endlessly in either direction, you'll be facing an expanse of open ocean which reaches the shores of Europe. Behind you will be sand dune upon sand dune, and if you're in the right place, you'll be able to spot the Assateague Island Light House, which has stood sentinel on the entire scene since 1867. No cabanas, hot dog stands, or boardwalk with souvenir hawkers. Just you, the sea, the sand, and the sky.
The weekly National Seashore campfire put on during the summer by the National Park Service rangers who maintain the Assateague Island National Seashore will give you a chance to lie on the beach under the stars munching on your toasted marshmallows and filling your head with tales of Blackbeard the Pirate's lost treasure as the Assateague Light House beam searches the darkness overhead. (The secret location of Blackbeard's treasure, however, remains unrevealed.)
Secret treasure may still be yours, however, if you stop in at Payne's Sea Treasures, a former hot dog stand on Ridge Road in Chincoteague. This odd establishment has evolved into one of the most amazing curio shops you'll find during your life. If your shell seeking efforts on Assateague have come up empty, Payne's can supply you with beach glass or any number of shells-- horseshoe crab shells in particular. Across the street from Payne's is a 20-foot tall Viking statue. Payne's Sea Treasure's late proprietor Mr. Capt'n Bob Payne purchased the statue from a defunct Muffler Man store.
Chincoteague has lots more secrets to uncover, but we'll let you have the fun of discovering them for yourself!

  • Chincoteague Island Vacation Paradise  By : Sam Serio
    Chincoteague Island Vacation Paradise

Just a short drive off Virginia's Eastern Shore lies an island so stunning that its seven mile length is the vacation destination for more than one million annual visitors, each one of whom arrives to enjoy a taste of Paradise. Chincoteague's Island natural beauty, coastal charm, and Southern down-home hospitality are what draw them from around the globe to this small place big in romance and tradition.
If you decide to take a page from their travel itineraries, you'll soon understand how easy it is to succumb to the spell of Chincoteague. That same spell has captivated the Chincoteague colony of artists, who do their best to capture the spirit and substance of life on their beloved island in paint, sculpture, glass, metal, and wood.
Chincoteague Island can be your stepping stone to the undeveloped wilds of Assateague Island, the 37-mile barrier island to its east which for millennia has protected Chincoteague from the worst of the Atlantic's legendary gales. Assateague is where you'll find the world-famous ponies of Chincoteague running free.
The Chincoteague ponies, except during Pony Penning Weekend, spend their days happily grazing and sunning in and along the marshes, forests, and beaches of the Chincoteague Island National Wildlife Refuge at the southern end of Assateague. They share their territory the over three hundred different migratory bird species which make Chincoteague and Assateague the best bird-watching haunts on the entire Atlantic Flyway.
You won't understand why the ancient Algonquin Indians named Chincoteague "The Beautiful Land across the Waters" until you've witnessed the sun setting across its marshes or stood on the Assateague shore at dawn as the Atlantic waves tumble along the pristine sands. Spend as much time as you like exploring the solitude of Assateague's protected waterways by kayak, canoe, or nature cruise. Cast your line from a deep sea charter for marlin and other great gamefish, or dig for a supper of legendary Chincoteague "Lil Nik" clams.
Step into the Eastern Shore of yesteryear by reserving your accommodations at one of Chinctcoteagues' exceptional 19th century bed and breakfasts, one of which was built before the Chincoteague Islanders displayed their characteristic independence by remaining loyal to the Union during the Civil War. Drift off to sleep and awaken again to the gentle whispers of the surf and the island breezes, and start your day's adventure with a breakfast of mouthwatering Southern delicacies.
Take time to mingle with the local artisans and shopkeepers. View the ceiling mural at wood carver Jay Cherrix' Sistine Shed, as well as his life-size sculpture of a Chincoteague pony foal. Get up close and personal with Chincoteague's marine life at the Island Aquarium where the touch tank will give you a hands-on introduction to both fish and shellfish.
Experience the shellfish in a different way by lunching on clam chowder or crab cakes at one of Chincoteague's several outstanding seafood restaurants. Follow lunch by crossing to Assateague Island on a rented bike for some wildlife viewing on the Wildlife Refuge's loops. Put the perfect ending on your day in Paradise by boarding Captain Barry's champagne evening cruise. You'll be entertained with the Captain's encyclopedic knowledge of Chincoteague history and enchanted by the sight of the sun setting on Chincoteague Bay!

Chincoteague Island: The Ultimate Romantic Getaway

Few places on planet Earth capture the idea of a romantic honeymoon getaway as the magical wilds and waterways of Chincoteague Island on Virginia's Eastern Shore. Once you and your spouse have successfully navigated the anxieties, anticipation, and hectic activities leading up to and including your wedding day, you deserve to leave the world behind and bask in the pleasure of each other's company, in surroundings of natural beauty and Southern charm.

Spend your Chincoteague Island honeymoon being pampered at one of the waterfront bed and breakfasts. The Island Manor House, built in 1848 and furnished with antiques dating back to pre-Civil war days, is among the most striking of Chincoteague's many stunning B&Bs. Enjoy your gourmet breakfast or afternoon snack in the garden room or the front courtyard, where the gentle trickle of the fountain and the sweet fragrance of rosebushes will soothe your spirits. Watch hummingbirds and butterflies winging their way through the private gardens--or maybe, like you, they're just floating on air!

The history of the Island Manor House makes it the perfect setting for your Chincoteague romantic getaway. It was built by Nathaniel Smith, Chincoteague's only doctor in 1848, and his friend Joseph Kenny, the Island's Postmaster, who married sisters. The home was actually divided into two smaller dwellings in the 19th century, but reconnected in the 1980s and has been a bed and breakfast ever since.

When you arrive, ask for a room with a view of the sun setting over the Chincoteague Channel, and then head out for an intimate dinner at one of Chincoteague's outstanding seafood restaurants within walking distance along Main Street. Make sure you allow enough time for sleep that you can awaken in time for an amazing and "decadent" Southern breakfast before heading out to explore your romantic Chincoteague surroundings.

A short drive across the channel to Assateague Island (or make the trip by bike if you like) will let you enjoy all the solitude you can possibly want. Assateague Island, the home of the word-famous Chincoteague ponies, is the site of both the Chincoteague Island National Wildlife Refuge and the Assateague Island National Seashore. What that means is that the honeymoon hours you spend on Assateague will be free of tourist developments, hot dog stands and souvenir vendors.

Rent a canoe or kayak and explore the Island waterways in peace and quiet. Or go beachcombing along endless stretches of empty beach. Hike the island trails through pine forests where you'll be serenaded by songbirds high above you, or simply lie on the beach and hold hands while you listen to the music of the whispering surf. Beach towels are provided courtesy of the Island Manor! Return to Chincoteague for some shopping at its charming art galleries and boutiques.

Enjoy a champagne cruise along Chincoteague Channel at sunset, take in another gourmet dinner followed by a movie at the delightfully Art Deco Island Roxy Theater, and return to your cozy Island Manor Room to luxuriate in your impossibly comfortable white terrycloth robes. The rest of your evening will pass as honeymoon evenings usually do, and in the morning, you can begin the fun all over again!

Treating yourself to an ultimate romantic getaway on Chincoteague Island will guarantee that your once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon is everything you've dreamed!

    Cheap Hotel Secrets Revealed

If you are travelling on a budget then the one thing that you should look to for major savings are cheap hotels. Flights can vary in price but the major saving lies within accommodation. The prices of accommodation vary greatly, even within the same area of a city or resort. This is because most cheap hotel stays are priced very competitively to attract more customers. Tourism is a bigger industry now then it has ever been and, as a result, tourists are reaping the benefits!

Travelling can be expensive, but cheap hotel secrets can save you up to 50% on the price for accommodation that you would usually pay. The golden rule is that if you don't do your research and fail to ask then you do not get, so be sure to do your homework. Your wallet will thank you for it at a later date.

The following cheap hotel secrets can be used to make major savings:

o Go for smaller hotels such as family run establishments and independent little places because they often offer special rates to attract customers in order to stay afloat. Not only that, they will often be more amenable to requests for free nights or special rates from a party booking than the larger hotels. Cheap hotel travel usually includes the smaller hotels rather than the larger ones.
o Chain hotels are also included in cheap hotel travel features because they provide a range of rooms to cater for every want and need. They have smaller, more basic rooms for those travelling on a budget, as well as larger and more luxurious rooms for individuals wanting that little bit more.
o If you are on a budget then try not to lust after what you cannot afford because you can guarantee that you will end up in a more expensive hotel. A two star hotel is usually just as good as a three star hotel but the latter may cost more because of the extra amenities that they have. You probably will not use the porter or the doorman, but you would have to pay extra just because they are there. As a result, the key to obtaining cheap hotel travel is assessing your needs in line with your budget and sticking to it.
o Cheap hotel travel is more readily available in the off-season so look to April or October to go on vacation rather than insisting on going in the middle of July. You will find that cheap hotel prices are cut in half during the off-season.
o Ask individual hotels for any discounts and special offers that they have on when you plan to travel. It may be that they have certain rooms that need decorating or an offer for individuals staying over a week, and you will never know about them unless you ask! Cheap hotel travel is made possible by those kinds of discounts, and every now and again the hotel itself will actually provide a special offer to entice you into staying there if you are cheeky and ask!
o Do a little research on the Internet. Internet rates are generally far more competitive than phone or face-to-face bookings in the same hotels. However, some of the Internet room rates are only open for a limited time so be sure to book the hotel that you want to stay at as soon as you spot it!

Cheap hotel travel is extremely important for travellers on a budget and there are various discounts available all year round. All of the cheap hotel travel secrets above will help you to save money, which will give you more to spend on enjoying yourself when you get there!

  • Chincoteague Island: Ecotourism Paradise  By : Sam Serio
    Chincoteague Island: Ecotourism Paradise
Although the Chincoteague ponies may roam barefoot and free on the wilds of Assateague Island for most of their lives, horseshoes are still readily found on both Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. They're horseshoe crabs, and they have an enormous role to play in making Chincoteague Island an ecotourism Paradise. Why?
Because the horseshoe crabs choose to lay their eggs in the sand and mud flats of Toms Cove Hook, making those areas prime feeding grounds for the huge flocks of shorebirds which descend on Chincoteague and Assateague Islands each year. Sandpipers, red knots, dunlin, sanderlings, and ruddy turnstones all thrive on the horseshoe crab eggs. Thousands of birding ecotourists come to Chincoteague each year to view the feasting shorebirds.
But there are many more natural wonders attracting ecotourists to Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. The islands' position along the Atlantic Flyway makes them are ideal rest stops and nesting areas for the hundreds of bird species which settle in their marshes, forests, and waterways. Eagles and ospreys soar overhead searching for prey. Swans, geese, and ducks of all varieties grace the islands' glades and ponds. The calls of colorful songbirds fill the air above the many nature trails in the islands' pine forests, and their hidden waterways invite long, lazy afternoons of kayaking and canoeing while watching for ponies and other wildlife.
Ecotourists who want to share the same bird's-eye view of Assateague and Chincoteague so familiar to their feathered friends can head for the 142-foot tall Assateague Island Light House. Built in 1867 and operated by the U.S. Coast Guard, the red-and-white striped light house guides ships attempting to navigate the barrier islands and its light is visible form 22 nautical miles away.
Pony viewing, of course, is a favorite pastime for those visiting Chincoteague's ecotourism Paradise, and during warm weather the ponies are commonly found roaming Assateague's beaches to escape the heat and humidity of their normal inland haunts. They have the run of the Island, and think nothing of stopping traffic while they amble across the roads!
While sun and water worshippers can crowd some of the Assateague Island beaches during the height of summer, there are plenty of opportunities for the solitude-seeking ecotourist as well. Assateague's paved roads are only seven miles in length, and on the Maryland side of the island the only way to catch a glimpse of the Maryland ponies is by foot or water. On the Virginia side, in the Chincoteague Island Wildlife refuge, there are five public hiking trails.
Many ecotourists, however, prefer to leave civilization behind by heading out along the beach from Toms Cove on the 13-mile trek ending at the state line public campground. Or they paddle their way along the Chincoteague Bay shoreline to reach campsites at Jim's Gut, Tingle Bay, Pine Tree, or Pope's Bay for an overnight stay.
Each of the three biospheres on Assateague Island's Maryland side have something unique to offer ecotourists. They are accessible by three separate trails, introducing hikers to the Life of the marsh; the Life of the Dune; and the Life of the Forest. A climb to the Life of the Forest Trail's observation deck will reward you with a breath stopping view of Chincoteague Bay and a clear understanding of what makes Chincoteague and Assateague Islands a true ecotourism Paradise!
  • Air Travel Nightmares: How To Cope  By : Sam Serio
If you are scared of flying or air travel then you are not in the minority. In the post-9/11 world, a good percentage of people are fearful of air travel, and with good reason. Air travel has always been a major source of fear but there have been a few hints and tips that have been developed, tried and tested in recent months. These tips cover literally everything from cancelled flight to key things to remember, and are all designed to ensure that you rest easy with peace of mind in the time immediately before you board the plane and during the flight itself.

First of all, make sure that you book your air travel nice and early. If you leave it until the last minute then you are liable to have to travel on a flight that you do not want with times that do not suit you. Alternatively, it may be that you have to take a more expensive form of air travel. Booking early not only assures you your set, it can also save undue panic too. If you have any frequent flyer miles you can also use them in part payment so that it will not be as expensive as you think to fly.

If your budget is a priority then you may want to look at flying off peak. Not only will the flights be cheaper, but they will also be less crowded and if you suffer from anxiety, this could be just what you need from your air travel. The space will prevent you from having a panic attack and enable you to travel in style and comfort. Off peak times are generally in the middle of the day or in the evening, so look for flights at those times of day.

If you happen to have booked on air travel that has no reserved seats then check in early to make sure that you can board first and choose the seat that is best for you instead of the one seat on the plane that you do not want above all others, which would inevitably happen if you were to turn up late! Some airlines actually allow you to choose your own seats so that you can allocate yourself where you like. American Airlines is the best air travel company for that.

Another reason to arrive at the airport early is to avoid the queues at check in. If you have luggage then at least two hours in advance for air travel is about right. You can sit and have a coffee after your bags are taken care of and relax before you board. If you are already anxious then the crowded halls will do nothing to help you so always arrive early for air travel.

If you are nervous about cancelled flights then make sure that you take a good book and a music player so that you can retreat to your own little world in case of an air travel delay. If your flight is announced as cancelled then seek out a flight attendant to ask about another scheduled flight. He or she should be able to direct you to the help desk and they can alter your flight for you. Think of it as an opportunity not to lose your temper or panic, but as an opportunity to have a little me time, courtesy of air travel. Few of us actually have time out these days so unexpected delays should be welcomed and not feared.

All in all, there is no air travel situation that you should not be able to deal with if you can think reasonably and logically, so enjoy!

  • Travel Accident Insurance FAQ  By : Sam Serio
    Travel Accident Insurance FAQ

Most people that have seen a travel accident insurance FAQ before will have ignored it. Those things that happen to others when they are on holiday will never happen to me... but they do. Lost luggage, stolen money and documents, accidents requiring medical attention - they all happen regardless of where we are at the time. It is essential, in this era where absolutely anything could go wrong, that an individual wanting to travel looks into the possibility of getting some form of travel insurance.

Travel insurance has traditionally been perceived as a waste of time and money, but that is most definitely not the case. The benefits of travel accident insurance policies are immense if you need to call on them. However, if you are lucky enough not to have to call on them then you always have that peace of mind that it is there in the background.

Like any form of insurance though, travel insurance can be confusing if you are looking for the right policy for you but are struggling to work out the benefits of each individual policy, so here is a comprehensive travel accident insurance FAQ to help answer any question that you may have!

Travel Accident Insurance FAQ 1 - What sort of travel accident insurance will I need?

There are two types of travel accident insurance that are commonly used - single trip and annual. The latter can save you money if you are planning to visit several countries or take several trips in one year, whereas the single trip travel accident insurance policy just covers the one trip. They both have the same conditions and thus provide similar cover, so all is really dependent on how often you travel.

Travel Accident Insurance FAQ 2 - How much should I expect to pay?

The cost of travel accident insurance largely depends on the provider, the amount covered, the duration of your trip and how old you are. A child would be cheaper to cover than an adult, and a weekend trip would be cheaper to cover than a week long vacation. There are family travel accident insurance policies that cover all of the individuals travelling and are cheaper than covering each individual separately. If you do travel more than once a year though, the annual travel insurance policies can save you a lot of money.

Travel Accident Insurance FAQ 3 - Should I inform the company of my state of health?

The answer to this is a resounding yes! If you fail to let insurance companies know about pre-existing conditions then the policy will be void if you ever needed to claim on it. Disclosing chronic and ongoing illnesses will increase your premiums but they will then pay out if you need to call on them so it is never a good idea to keep quiet about your health!

Travel Accident Insurance FAQ 4 - Are extreme sports covered?

Under normal travel accident insurance policies extreme sports are not covered as standard because they may endanger your health far more than simply going on a beach or city trip. However, most insurers will happily add extreme or winter sports coverage to your policy for an extra fee. The extreme sports add-on is highly recommended if you are planning to do something out of the ordinary!

Regardless of the travel accident insurance policy you eventually choose, you should always read the terms and conditions to make sure that you are fully aware of what you are covered for and what you are not, as well as the exceptions and exclusions. It is essential to have a travel accident insurance policy these days, and for that little peace of mind, it is well worth it!

o Book your vacation from a cheap travel website rather than a travel agent because websites, like Expedia and lastminute.com, often have great deals for flights and hotels that travel agents do not get. If you do insist on booking through an agent then go for the last minute deals instead. Booking a week or so before can save you hundreds!
o Cheap travel is often dependent on how cheap the country that you are going to is. Again, South American countries are extremely affordable, with complete meals costing as little as one or two dollars. Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia are perhaps the best in terms of cheap travel affordability. It costs little to get to these countries and little to be able to eat, travel and survive there!
o Staying in smaller hotels or hostels can also save money, but the latter tends to be for the students rather than the adults. Staying in smaller hotels will often enhance your experience because you are often made to feel like royalty, especially if the hotel is a family run business!
o Purchase a guidebook and read it before you go. A guidebook will highlight the beauty of the area without pushing you towards the most expensive attractions in town. If you want cheap travel then you should always seek out the free tourist attractions first, of which there are plenty in most cities and towns.
o Cheap travel is also about becoming one with the place you visit and you can do that by eating in cafes and restaurants that the locals eat in instead of the expensive ones aimed at tourists. You will save money because local eateries are cheaper and get to sample some of the fine food.

Cheap travel makes the world more accessible to everyone, but by looking at the local area and making the most of what is there, you need not spend a fortune. Instead, you can spend your money on the next cheap travel trip!
  • How To Travel With Children  By : Sam Serio
Travelling with children can be a nightmare. Any parent that has had to put up with a child on a long journey will testify to that point! Travel with children is extremely stressful and can indeed test you to the end of your patience. Not only that, there is no way to get away from the child if he or she does start acting spoilt. While spending time with family is extremely important, so is enjoying the experience so you have to have a plan of action prepared well in advance in order to make sure that you can have a relaxing time away from the stresses and strains of modern life!

Before you even set off, you should plan out how you are going to travel with your children. You should always pick a child-friendly destination to travel to if you are taking the whole family with you. Travelling with children to a remote destination that is tailored for adults is not a great idea because they will be constantly complaining that they are bored and thus will ruin your vacation as well. Look for a beach resort with a hotel that offers free activities for children. This will certainly save you money because the beach and free activities will keep the children amused for hours!

You should also think about the food available at the destination. Children are generally fussy eaters and travelling with children can highlight that fact, but if individual resorts offer buffets then this is likely to cater for all tastes! It is always best to choose a hotel offering breakfast only if you are travelling with children. This way, if they do not like the food at the hotel then you have lost absolutely nothing and can find a restaurant elsewhere that they do like!

Travelling with children is perhaps the most difficult during the journey, but there are a few tips that can help ease the stress for you. For example, get to the airport early because they can amuse themselves with watching the aeroplanes and it saves the last minute rush than can really see your stress levels rise! Also, if you can get flights during the night then this will also help you to relax because the children will sleep during that time!

Always pack a box full of treats when travelling with children too because this will help to keep them quiet throughout the trip! Include snacks like raisins, juices, cereal, rice cakes and fruit, along with some candy for the purpose of bribery if need be! Also, pack a few of their favourite toys and games to keep them amused if they do happen to wake up at any time! If they have comfort toys then be sure to pack those as well because travelling with children can be a nightmare if they do not have them!

When you do get to your destination, the nightmare of children can be far from over if you do not take the necessary precautions to ensure that all runs smoothly. Make sure that you have something different planned for every day to ensure that they do not get bored as a result of repetition. This can be extremely difficult in a resort that caters solely for older children and/or adults. A little research ahead of time can always help, but insist that you all spend the first day exploring so that the children are able to find things that they want to do on their own because this will keep them quiet and give you ammunition should they moan later on!

Travelling with children can be a nightmare, but travelling with children can also be an absolute joy. Just make sure that you have done your homework and know ahead of time what to expect and you will find that your vacation falls into the latter category rather than the former!
  • CHincoteague Pony Swim  By : Sam Serio
    Chincoteague Pony Swim

If you go to Chincoteague Island during the last week of July, you're probably there for the Pony Penning and Auction, like approximately 50,000 other visitors. You'll be in for an exciting time, but what you won't see is the sort of round-up which takes place on Federal grazing lands in the Western United States. There'll be no helicopters herding exhausted mustangs into waiting trucks from far above

The 150 ponies of the Chincoteague Island herd are such old hands at being rounded up (they are gathered twice a year for veterinary checkups) that on the Wednesday of the annual four hundred yard Chincoteague Pony Swim from Assateague Island to the Firemen's Carnival grounds, most of them take the exercise "in stride."

The Chincoteague Island Pony Swim has been taking place since 1925, when the first was held to raise funds for the Chincoteague Island Fire Department. Two disastrous fires in the preceding five years had destroyed much of Chincoteague Island's business district, and the Fire Department desperately needed better equipment. They held a Firemen's Carnival that July, featuring the first Pony Swim and Auction. Fifteen pony foals were sold.

Word of the Pony Swim soon reached Virginia's Eastern Shore, and by 1947, when Marguerite Henry published her classic children's book Misty of Chincoteague, the Fire Department had taken ownership of the wild Chincoteague ponies at the southern end of Assateague Island. They assumed responsibility for the ponies' well-being, and still make sure that only the adults and foals strong enough to manage the Chincoteague Pony Swim are herded across the shallows each year.

One condition which can affect the Chincoteague Island mares with foals is hypocalcemia. Hypocalcemia causes mares which are nursing older foals to lose muscular control, and in hot weather the condition is aggravated. It's easily preventable, and in some years up to twelve mares have been treated for it and made the Chincoteague Island Pony Swim in perfect health.

Before every Pony Swim the herd is examined by a veterinarian so that both mares in the late stages of pregnancy and those with very young foals are trailered to the carnival grounds. The rest of the herd is rounded up by Chincoteague Island's famous Salt Water Cowboys, who must time their efforts so that the Chincoteague Pony Swim occurs when the tide is lowest.

Occasionally a foal will become separated from its mother during the Chincoteague Pony Swim, but that's a rare occurrence and any stragglers are picked up by patrolling boats. When the entire herd has made it safely to shore, the Salt Water Cowboys drive them to corrals on the Carnival grounds to be examined once more before the next day's auction.

The second leg of the Chincoteague Pony Swim occurs on Friday, when the Salt Water Cowboys herd the stallions and mares whose foals were sold back across the channel to their home on Assateague. Mares with foals too young for the auction are kept on Chincoteague until the fall. In October the Salt Water Cowboys return them to Assateague during the fall roundup when the entire herd receives pre-winter veterinary treatment.

The Chincoteague Pony Swim and Pony Penning are at the heart of life on Chincoteague Island, and those small horses carry that weight with remarkable willingness!

Travel Like A Pro: How To Tour The World In Style

Travelling in style is the way that most people see themselves travelling these days. It is infinitely possible, but the majority of the time, that plan goes completely wrong because we get caught up in packing, arranging documents and finances and forget to concentrate on what it is that makes travel so important - taking the time out to relax and chill out for a while. Travelling in style is the epitome of that for a number of reasons.

Travelling in style is all about taking care of yourself and making the time to do so. Very few people find that they can take their time when heading to the airport because, for the majority, it is a mad rush to pack grab everything they need and then get to the airport on time. It is possible though. There are several ways you can achieve this, and all require you to take certain steps:

Step one - Start planning the week before you are due to fly if you want to travel in style. Make a list of what you are to pack and lay out the outfit that you are to wear when you board the plane. It does not matter where you are travelling to, just as long as you remember to include all of the essentials in your carry on. A book, a music player of some sort, an eye mask, facial wipes and some candies to suck on when the plane takes off and lands so your ears do not pop! Make sure that your carry on is light but also contains a change of underwear just in case your luggage gets lost! This way, you don't get caught short.

Step two - Plan ahead some more! This time, check out the essentials of the destination that you are heading to. If you want to travel in style then you cannot land in a mini-skirt and flip-flops if it is freezing cold and raining. Keep a watch on the weather forecast in the week before you fly because it will constantly update and give you a great idea on what to expect. Also, buy a map and travel guide so that you can easily find your way to your hotel when you get there. Travelling in style is all about being prepared and making sure that you can handle anything that your trip throws at you!

Step three - Wear layers when you board the plane if you want to travel in style. If it is hot then you can strip off the layers, but a cold plane is nobody's friend and encourages bugs and colds to spread to the vulnerable. As a result, you want to be warm! If you wear layers then you also escape using the airline blankets! You can look good and feel good all in one go!

Step four - Finally enjoy it! Travelling in style should be fun! Air travel should not be a chore, but it will be if you view it that way! Travelling should be about adventure, so be determined to make it one!

  • Chincoteague Island - Beautiful Land Across the Water  By : Sam Serio
Native American tribes were thriving on what is now Virginia's Eastern Shore for more than twenty centuries when Captain John Smith arrived in 1607. One of these tribes, led by Chief Barabokees and Emperor Waskawampe, had claimed as their own an island five miles off the Virginia coast, calling it Chincoteague, or "The Beautiful Land across the Water." The Assateague tribe gave their name to the barrier island just to the east of Chincoteague.

The Virginia and Maryland Indian tribes cherished Chincoteague, Assateague, and the other barrier islands for their rich stores of game and shellfish. They valued the shells of the whelk so much, in fact, that they used them to create strips of beadwork, referred to as "Roanoke." Roanoke was considered legal tender among the tribes, who traded for other goods.
Although Chincoteague Islanders no longer use shells to fund their daily lives, they cherish their "Beautiful Land across the Water" as much as the Native Americans did four centuries ago. The marshes, forests, and beaches of Chincoteague and Assateague fill the islanders' lives with year-long beauty, and provide a million annual visitors with glimpses of nature that have changed little since the islands' paths were followed by Indians stalking wild game.
Much of Chincoteague Island's timelessness has been preserved in the work of the Island's gifted artists' colony. Canvases depicting sunrise over wetland grasses stretching as far as the eye can see, or capturing a moment of perfect stillness before a great white egret sets down at Goose Pond recall scenes which would have greeted the Algonquins on their approach to the Beautiful Land across the Water. The lines of a perfectly carved Chincoteague swan decoy provide a lasting memory of these magnificent birds swimming along the Chincoteague marshes at twilight.
The fields, beaches, and wetlands of Chincoteague and Assateague have fed and sheltered countless millions of migratory birds traveling the Atlantic Flyway through the centuries. The waterfowl, as well as the Island's native deer population, were staples of the Native American diet. Bow hunters in limited numbers are still permitted to hunt deer on Assateague in order to control their population.
The island forests echo with the calls of nesting songbirds, like warblers, red-winged blackbirds, sparrows, and nut hatches. During the summer their songs are joined by those of cardinals, blue jays, and finches, while the staccato of woodpeckers keeps time.
The Native Americans relied not only on Chincoteague's game but on the bounty of her waters for their survival. That bounty still draws a steady stream of recreational fishers each year, arriving in the spring for the first of the flounder runs, and continuing through the summer to head for deeper water to go after sharks, tuna bluefish, and in late July, the greatest of all game fish, marlin.
Then there are the oysters, clams, and crabs. The first Europeans to arrive on Virginia's Eastern Shore in 1607 startled a group of Native Americans roasting a shellfish feast, and dined on the clams, crabs, and oysters when the Indians disappeared into the forest. By the 1800s The Beautiful Land across the Water had become one of America's premiere suppliers of clams and oysters.
Beautiful, bountiful, and bright with the promise of adventure, Chincoteague Island has something for everyone!
  • Chincoteague - Ponies, Beaches, and Family Fun  By : Sam Serio
Chincoteague - Ponies, Beaches, and Family Fun

Mother Nature made horses, and Mother Nature made ponies. But Mother Nature also made a remarkably tough, intelligent, and beautiful breed of horses whose small stature has meant that they are universally referred to as ponies, and turned them loose to roam the shores and wilds of Assateague Island, Virginia.

Today, however, their known as the Chincoteague Island ponies, for the Virginia coastal island directly to the west of Assateague. The ponies are a major reason why Chincoteague and Assateague Islands have become magnets for families vacationing on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

These two small stretches of land are overflowing with family-friendly attractions, including a National Wildlife Refuge, a National Seashore, and a Maryland State Park. Chincoteague Island has gained international fame thanks to the annual Pony Penning and Auction, which occurs at the height of summer when the weather, fishing, water sports, and other opportunities for outdoor fun are at their peak. An entire week at the end of each July is set aside on Chincoteague for Pony Penning.

The week begins with the annual three-day Chincoteague Island Blueberry Festival bringing artists and crafters from ten states. They are greeted by thousands of mainlanders anxious to experience blueberries in every imaginable form, from soup, pudding, and shortcake to muffins and, of course, the Ultimate Blueberry Pie. There's plenty of live music to keep things hopping, and both breakfast and lunch provided by the Pepper Jack Grille--including hot dogs and grilled cheese quesadillas for the kids, and a grilled chicken sandwich with blueberry mayo!

After such a great kickoff, the family fun on Chincoteague continues to build throughout Pony Penning Week. While you wait for Pony Penning Day to arrive, you and the kids can bike the wildlife trails on Assateague Island, visiting its Wildlife Refuge Center, and earning your Junior Birding badges. Get a closer look at the ponies so integral to life on Chincoteague by visiting the Chincoteague Pony Centre on Carriage Drive. Treat the kids to a pony ride or riding lesson!
No family vacation on Chincoteague and Assateague is complete without a day at the beach. The Assateague National Seashore includes nineteen miles of undeveloped beaches where you and the kids can hike, beach comb, or sunbathe while learning how Assateague was before the arrival of civilization. Swim and surf to your heart's content, or try your luck surf fishing.
There's more family fun every Friday and Saturday night of July, and throughout Pony Penning Week, with the Chincoteague Carnival benefiting the Chincoteague Island Volunteer Fire Department. Enjoy all the traditional carnival rides, games, and food, as well as a spectacular July 4th fireworks display. The highlight of the Carnival is the Pony Auction on Thursday of Pony Penning Week.
On Wednesday, Chincoteague's famous Salt Water Cowboys head for Assateague Island to round up the pony herd. At low tide they herd the ponies about 100 yards across the Channel for Thursday's auction. The remaining ponies are herded back to Assateague for another year of freedom on Friday.
If family fun is what you want, there are no better places to find it than on Chincoteague and Assateague Islands during the final week of July!
